SKYE NICOLSON - BOXER

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet and listen to former world champion boxer Skye Nicolson. Story. She didn’t disappoint. For those who don’t know her story, I encourage you to check it out; she has been through adverse, loss and every hurdle you could imagine and has the self-awareness & motivation to push through.

Skye's speech came just after the Tokyo Olympic games had been Postponed, Yet another setback in this young ladies' career; imagine sacrificing so much for it to have been taken away, not knowing if it’s cancelled or postponed, the uncertainty that all Olympic athletes faced must have been overwhelming.

So when the Olympics finally took place, as you can imagine, I eagerly followed her matches and other matches from her weight class.

Every bout, my stomach was in knots; Skye reached the quarter-final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics before suffering a 3–2 defeat to Great Britain’s Karriss Artingstal

But then I thought about the current skewed view on success. This driven young lady is only 26 years old?; she has already beaten adversity, been a world champion, won medals and competed at the world's most significant sporting events and she is an articulate and compelling speaker.

If that’s not a success, what is?

With the commonwealth games in full motion, I am looking forward to following Skye in her new weight class; Skye won a world championship at 64kg, and has elected to slip down a weight division to 57 kilograms and, at her best, is considered a significant chance of being on the podium.

She is currently 4-0 in the new weight class.

GOOD LUCK SKYE.
